Aluminium Heritage Doors

Aluminium heritage doors give you the classic look of traditional, old-fashioned steel frames but with all the benefits of modern technology. They are famous for their thin metal bars that create a beautiful grid or “crittall-style” pattern on the glass. Because modern aluminium is so strong, the frames can be kept incredibly thin, letting massive amounts of natural light flood into your home while keeping your property safe and warm. We supply and install these premium heritage doors to fit your exact project needs. They are a perfect choice for stylish indoor room dividers, back garden patio doors, or traditional home renovations that need real character and clean lines.

Why Heritage Doors Continue to Influence Modern Architecture?

The enduring appeal of heritage styling lies in its perfect balance of historical character and clean, geometric lines. Originally inspired by early industrial steel frames, this design style has become a timeless favourite in modern home renovations:

  • Timeless Steel-Look Aesthetics: The classic grid pattern provides an instant architectural focal point. It adds structural interest and a touch of industrial grit to both traditional cottages and sleek, minimalist extensions.
  • The Power of Fine Lines: By using slim horizontal glazing bars, these doors break up large glass expanses into beautiful, ordered panes. This gives a room an architectural design feature that standard large glass sheets simply cannot match.
  • Ultimate Design Flexibility: While they look beautiful as external patio doors opening onto a garden, they are also incredibly popular as internal room dividers. They allow you to close off spaces like a home office or dining room without blocking light or making the home feel small.
  • Striking Visual Contrast: The bold, dark frames create a crisp frame for the view beyond them. This acts like a picture frame around your garden or the next room, turning an everyday view into a deliberate design choice.

Matching Different Types of Homes

Heritage doors are incredibly versatile, allowing them to complement a wide variety of architectural styles across the UK. Whether you are updating a period property or adding character to a brand-new space, these frames adapt beautifully:

  • Traditional Cottages and Period Properties: For older homes, these doors offer a sympathetic way to replace old windows and doors without losing historic charm. The slim grid lines perfectly mimic traditional multi-pane window styles, keeping the property’s original character intact while upgrading its warmth and security.
  • Modern Industrial Extensions: If you are building a contemporary flat-roof extension, black heritage doors provide that highly sought-after industrial look. The bold, dark grid lines create a striking contrast against crisp white render, modern cladding, or exposed internal brickwork.
  • Victorian and Edwardian Townhouses: These homes look fantastic with heritage doors installed as rear patio exits. The design respects the high ceilings and grand proportions of the architecture while opening up the back of the house to the garden for modern, open-plan living.
  • Internal Living Spaces: You do not have to limit these doors to the outside of your house. They work beautifully inside the home to separate a kitchen from a dining room or to create a quiet home office, allowing light to flow from room to room while reducing noise.

Designing Your Perfect Heritage Look

Creating the ideal look with heritage doors comes down to selecting the right design details. Because these systems are highly customisable, you can easily adapt the framing and glass layout to match your home’s specific architectural style:

  • Choosing Your Grid Pattern: The number of horizontal and vertical bars you choose completely changes the look. You can opt for a busy, traditional grid with lots of small glass panes for an authentic look, or use fewer bars for a cleaner, more modern twist on the classic style.
  • Selecting the Right Profile Width: The main goal of heritage styling is keeping the metal lines as thin as possible. Choosing ultra-slim frame profiles ensures you get that classic steel look while maximising the glass area so your rooms stay bright.
  • Hardware and Handle Details: To finish the look, pay close attention to the ironmongery. Classic, low-profile lever handles in matt black seamlessly blend into the frame, while traditional brass or antique bronze options can add a beautiful period touch to an older home.
  • Deciding Between Single or Double Doors: Think about how you want the space to function. A single heritage door works beautifully for utility rooms or pantries, while a grand pair of double doors (French doors) creates a stunning, wide opening for main patio exits or dining room partitions.

Heritage Doors vs. Sliding Doors: Which is Right for Your Home?

Choosing between heritage doors and sliding doors depends entirely on your home’s architectural style, how much space you have, and the kind of view you want to create. Both systems offer exceptional modern performance, but they serve completely different design goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Original steel doors can rust over time if their coatings scratch, especially in damp weather. Modern aluminium heritage doors solve this completely. Aluminium naturally resists corrosion and features a durable powder coating that will never rust or peel.

A Crittall-style door features an industrial look with slim metal frames and horizontal grid bars that divide the glass into smaller panes. Modern versions use high-strength aluminium to give you this exact historic look with far better warmth and security.

Yes, they are a massive architectural trend. Homeowners love their clean, dark geometric lines for traditional houses, modern industrial extensions, and as stylish internal room dividers.

High-specification aluminium heritage doors are the ideal alternative. They replicate the ultra-slim frames and classic grid look at a more cost-effective price point, while providing superior thermal insulation and zero ongoing maintenance.

Three months on from fitting I am delighted with my 5 casement windows, fixed feature window, back door and B&B front door. The quality of the joinery and fittings is excellent, enhancing my property considerably, and the service I received was very good indeed. Issues were quickly and fairly dealt with, and the cost was competitive. Thankyou! Two years in from fitting, some issues have arisen with my windows and French doors that require attention. Joel came out today, accurately and comprehensively assessed the problems, and a remedial team are due to come out for a day and remedy them before winter. Very reassuring, and an indication that Allwood's warranty can be relied upon.

Very happy with our windows, and the overall experience with Allwood, would highly recommend. We ordered 15 painted wood casement windows in a variety of sizes, some opening, some not, some with Georgian bars, some not. We also had two different paint colours (front of house and back of house), and were colour-matching to F&B paint colours we're using elsewhere. Allwood dealt with all our requests with ease. It's fantastic to deal with a company where you're not passed from pillar to post - there's a real personal touch all the way through from survey to fitting, exactly what you'd expect from a family owned business. The windows themselves are great quality, and the price was very competitive.
