Why More Homeowners Are Choosing Aluminium
More and more people are choosing aluminium when upgrading their homes, and it is easy to see why. While timber and uPVC are traditional options, aluminium offers a unique mix of modern benefits. It looks fantastic and works beautifully, making it a great long-term investment. Aluminium is uniquely suited to modern architecture and bespoke extensions where visual simplicity and precision detailing are paramount.
- More Glass, Less Frame: The inherent strength of the material allows frames to remain remarkably slim while effortlessly supporting large, heavy glass panels. This makes aluminium doors the definitive choice for seamless indoor-outdoor transitions and open-plan living.
- Refined Aesthetics: These windows deliver sharp, clean lines and immaculate, consistent finishes that beautifully complement contemporary, minimalist, and transitional property styles alike.
- Performance Engineering: The premium aluminium systems we supply are engineered to balance sophisticated aesthetics with flawless technical performance.
- Smooth and Secure: Every door and window operates effortlessly, fitted with high-specification multi-point security locks and advanced double or triple glazing to keep your home warm and highly energy-efficient.
- Bespoke Configurations: With a wide choice of layouts, opening styles, and colours, these UK-manufactured systems can be tailored precisely to meet the unique design aspirations of your project.

Is Aluminium the Right Material for Your Home?
Choosing the right material for your new frames depends on the age of your property, your architectural goals, and your lifestyle priorities. While Allwood handcrafts its own traditional timber products in-house, our premium aluminium installations offer an entirely different set of modern structural benefits.
When Aluminium Is the Best Choice
Aluminium is the ideal option if your project requires expansive glass walls, minimal maintenance, or clean, contemporary lines.
- Modern Extensions & Wide Openings: If you are designing a bright, open-plan kitchen or a substantial rear extension, aluminium easily supports the heavy structural loads required for large spans of glass on thin profiles.
- Low Upkeep: Unlike traditional timber, high-quality aluminium requires almost zero maintenance. It will not rot, warp, or twist over time, requiring only an occasional wipe down with soapy water to keep it looking pristine.
- Design Flexibility: Sourced from top UK fabricators, these systems can be finished in a vast array of durable, baked-on powder-coated colours, allowing you to match the exact aesthetic of your build.
Situations Where Another Material May Be Better
While it is a fantastic material, it might not be the right fit for every single house or budget.
- Historic or Listed Buildings: If your home sits within a strict conservation area or is a protected period property, local planning regulations typically dictate the use of traditional timber to preserve the original character of the building.
- Standard Projects on a Strict Budget: If keeping the upfront capital cost as low as possible is your primary objective, high-quality uPVC remains a more cost-effective choice for standard, smaller window replacements.
Factors to Consider Before Buying
Before you make your final choice, keep these quick points in mind:
- Frame Profile: Consider how much visible frame you want. Aluminium offers the slimmest sightlines on the market, shifting the focus away from the frames and onto the glass.
- Timeless Colour Choices: Because the powder-coated finish is designed to last for decades without fading, it is wise to select a timeless shade—such as classic anthracite grey or black—that will complement your home for years to come.
- Professional Installation: Precision engineering requires precision fitting. Our experienced, FENSA-certified team handles the entire supply and installation process, ensuring a flawless thermal seal and perfectly smooth operation.
Aluminium Solutions for Every Opening
Because aluminium is so strong and flexible, it can be made to fit almost any space in your house. Whether you want to replace standard windows or open up a whole wall to the garden, there is a design built to fit your space. Here are the main options available
- Bi-Fold Doors: Designed to concertina smoothly to one side, these doors allow you to completely open up a rear wall. They create a seamless link between your indoor living space and the patio, featuring robust weather seals and secure locking systems that keep the elements out when closed.
- Sliding Doors: For wide structural openings where uninterrupted views are the priority, large sliding systems are ideal. Featuring expansive glass panels that glide effortlessly on hidden tracks, the rigid aluminium frame handles the heavy glass weight perfectly without bending or sagging, unlike standard uPVC alternatives. This structural rigidity also allows for advanced features like corner glazing, where two walls of glass meet without a central post.
- Heritage-Style Glazing: Perfect for industrial-style designs or older traditional cottages, these frames replicate the classic look of black steel windows. They offer timeless architectural charm combined with modern thermal efficiency, and are an excellent choice for connecting side glazing with an aluminium roof lantern to give your extension a unified finish.
How Aluminium Performs Throughout the Year
When upgrading your home, it is important to know how your windows and doors will handle the changing British weather. Because we source our premium aluminium systems from top UK manufacturers, they are engineered to cope with everything from freezing winters to hot summer days. Here is how they perform through every season:
- Spring and Summer Efficiency: In the warmer months, large bi-fold or sliding doors make it easy to open up your home and enjoy the fresh air. For days when the doors are shut, advanced glass options help stop your rooms from getting uncomfortably hot, while the tough finish will not peel or fade in the sun.
- Autumn Wind and Rain: As the weather turns wet and windy, you can rely on tight weather seals and built-in drainage channels. Unlike older materials that can warp or twist when they get wet, aluminium stays perfectly square and completely watertight, keeping draughts and dampness out of your home.
- Winter Warmth and Comfort: There is an old myth that metal frames make a room cold, but modern design changes that completely. The frames feature clever insulating barriers inside the metal that stop heat from escaping. Paired with top-tier double or triple glazing, they lock the warmth inside your home and help keep your heating bills down during the coldest months.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Aluminium Windows & Doors
Investing in new windows and doors is a big decision for any home project. To make sure you get the best value and performance for your money, it helps to know what pitfalls to look out for. Here are the most common mistakes homeowners make and how to avoid them:
- Choosing Price Over Quality: It can be tempting to go for the cheapest quote, but low-cost options often use thinner metal and weaker parts. Sourcing your systems from top UK manufacturers ensures you get strong, rigid frames and heavy-duty locks that last for decades.
- Forgetting About Thermal Breaks: Not all aluminium frames are built the same way. Cheaper, older designs lack proper insulation barriers inside the metal, which can lead to cold draughts and condensation inside your home. Always make sure your frames have modern thermal breaks to keep your rooms warm.
- Picking the Wrong Colour: Because the tough finish on aluminium lasts for decades without fading, you cannot easily repaint them later like wood. It is best to avoid passing trends and pick a timeless colour that you will still love years down the line.
- Trying to Measure and Fit Them Yourself: Aluminium frames are made to exact sizes. Even a tiny mistake in the measurements can stop a large bi-fold or sliding door from moving smoothly. Using an experienced local team to handle the full supply and installation ensures a perfect, weather-tight fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
High-quality uPVC is a cost-effective choice for standard windows. However, for large openings, wide spans of glass, or ultra-slim profiles, aluminium is superior due to its immense structural strength.
Aluminium carries a higher upfront cost than uPVC due to premium materials and manufacturing. However, because it lasts for decades without warping or degrading, it represents an excellent long-term investment.
Handcrafted timber is unmatched for historic or character properties where retaining authentic period charm is essential. Aluminium is ideal for contemporary extensions where minimal sightlines and zero maintenance are preferred.
Because the powder-coated finish lasts for decades, timeless shades are best. Anthracite grey, dark charcoal, and classic black remain the top choices as they suit both modern render and traditional British brickwork.
Aluminium is usually not permitted on listed buildings or in strict conservation areas, where planning rules mandate traditional timber. For standard windows on a very tight budget, uPVC is a more economical choice.

Three months on from fitting I am delighted with my 5 casement windows, fixed feature window, back door and B&B front door. The quality of the joinery and fittings is excellent, enhancing my property considerably, and the service I received was very good indeed. Issues were quickly and fairly dealt with, and the cost was competitive. Thankyou! Two years in from fitting, some issues have arisen with my windows and French doors that require attention. Joel came out today, accurately and comprehensively assessed the problems, and a remedial team are due to come out for a day and remedy them before winter. Very reassuring, and an indication that Allwood's warranty can be relied upon.Posted on Google

Very happy with our windows, and the overall experience with Allwood, would highly recommend. We ordered 15 painted wood casement windows in a variety of sizes, some opening, some not, some with Georgian bars, some not. We also had two different paint colours (front of house and back of house), and were colour-matching to F&B paint colours we're using elsewhere. Allwood dealt with all our requests with ease. It's fantastic to deal with a company where you're not passed from pillar to post - there's a real personal touch all the way through from survey to fitting, exactly what you'd expect from a family owned business. The windows themselves are great quality, and the price was very competitive.
